It’s a well-known fact that I love dogs. I smile at them in the street and get ridiculously excited if they come into the pub. I even used to work at dog kennels, which was basically my idea of Heaven. Oh, and I say ‘clap’ a dog instead of ‘pet’ because I’m from the west coast and that’s what we say, okay?! In honour of Crufts 2017, this week’s Flash Five is dedicated to my favourite dog breeds.
5) Blue Merle Collie
Collies are a wonderfully intelligent breed – there’s a reason why they’re working dogs. While the Border Collie holds a special place in my heart, it’s the Blue Merle Collie that steals it. They have all the loveable traits of the Border Collie with the added beauty of a dapple grey coat and piercing blue eyes. My best friend has the most affectionate Red Merle called Khal, who doesn’t have a bad bone in his fluffy body!
4) English Bull Terrier
Much like Staffies, English Bull Terriers are often misunderstood (I blame Sid’s dog from Toy Story). One of my favourite regulars at the kennels was a Bull Terrier called Poppy and she was the sweetest dog imaginable. I absolutely adore their noses; they have such a unique shape that you don’t see on too many breeds. Their bodies are so stumpy, but strong with adorable pointy ears.
3) Miniature Poodle
I couldn’t possibly exclude Penny and Bo from this list! Miniature Poodles are not my favourite breed, but I do love my girls! They’re affectionate and loyal; inquisitive and hilarious; quiet and clever. Not to mention, they look like little bears when they’ve not been clipped! One of the best things about Miniature Poodles is they don’t shed, so I don’t need to worry about being covered in dog hair all the time.
2) Miniature Dachshund
This is a breed that has snuck up on me in recent years, thanks to Instagram! I discovered Harlow and Sage (and Indiana and Reese!) and immediately fell in love. If you’re ever having a bad day, take a look at that account. Miniature Dachshunds are just so adorable! Did you know you can get ramps to help them up and down from the furniture?! They’re such a recognisable breed – I find it impossible not to smile when I see one!
1) Siberian Husky
Siberian Huskies have always been my favourite breed of dog. To me, they are the most beautiful dogs in the world thanks to their wolf-like appearance, striking eyes and stunning coats. I particularly adore when they have two different coloured eyes. I’ve always wanted a Husky from a young age, but I’ve came to realise that (as much as I love them) they’re not the right breed for my lifestyle. They’re high maintenance dogs, who are extremely active and vocal. They also like to live in packs, which just isn’t possible for someone who lives in a flat without a garden. But, I still maintain it’s my dream to go dog sledding one day!
